Is Your Business Even Visible on ChatGPT?

A few weeks back, one of our clients — a salon owner in Bareilly — asked us something we hadn't been asked before.

"Mera business Google Maps pe toh number 1 aa raha hai, but mera cousin ne ChatGPT pe pucha 'best salon near Civil Lines Bareilly' toh mera naam hi nahi aaya. Aisa kyu?"

Good question. And honestly, it's one every local business owner should be asking right now.

Search Is Quietly Changing Under Everyone's Feet

For the last ten-plus years, "getting found online" meant one thing: rank on Google. Optimize your Google Business Profile, get reviews, target the right keywords, and customers would find you.

That's still true. But it's no longer the whole story.

More and more people — especially younger, phone-first users — are skipping the search bar entirely and just asking ChatGPT, Google's AI Overview, or Perplexity directly. "Best jewellery shop for gold rate today in Bareilly." "Which coaching institute is good for NEET prep near Pilibhit." "Salon that does good hair spa in Rampur."

These AI tools don't show you ten blue links to click through. They just... answer. They pick two or three businesses, describe them, and move on. If your business isn't one of the two or three it mentions, you don't just rank lower — you don't exist in that conversation at all.

Why This Is Harder Than Regular SEO

Here's the part that surprised us too. AI systems don't just read your website to figure out who you are. They pull from everywhere — your Google reviews, your Justdial listing, what people say about you on Facebook groups, even how a customer described you in passing on Instagram.

That means if your website says "premium bridal jewellery," but your Justdial listing says "gold and silver shop," and nobody's ever written a proper Google review mentioning what you actually specialize in — the AI has no clean picture of your business. So it either skips you or describes you in a way that doesn't match what you actually offer.

We've started calling this "entity consistency" internally — basically, does every version of your business online tell the same, clear story? For most local businesses we've audited so far, the answer is no. Same shop, five different descriptions across five platforms.

What We're Actually Telling Our Clients to Do

We're not going to pretend there's a magic switch here. Nobody — not us, not the big agencies, not even Google — has a clean dashboard yet that says "you rank #3 on ChatGPT." That kind of tracking doesn't fully exist. Anyone promising you guaranteed ChatGPT rankings right now is selling you something that can't really be measured.

What does work, based on what we've seen so far:

Clean up the basics everywhere, not just on your website. Your business name, address, phone number, and a one-line description of what you do — make sure it reads the same on Google Business Profile, Justdial, Sulekha, your Instagram bio, everywhere. This is unglamorous work, but it's the foundation.

Get reviews that actually describe what you do. A five-star review that just says "very good service" doesn't help. A review that says "got my daughter's ring resized here in an hour, good rates" gives AI something specific to repeat about you.

Answer real questions on your website. Not generic "About Us" copy, but actual pages that answer what people search — "gold rate today Bareilly," "how much does a bridal makeup package cost in Rohilkhand," that sort of thing. Be patient with this one. Local SEO already takes 3–6 months to show real movement. AI search visibility is newer and slower to measure. We'd rather tell clients this straight than oversell it.
